A denture is nothing but a replacement for the missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. Regular dentures can be easily removable.
There are 2 varieties of dentures. One of them is complete denture, while the other one is partial denture.
Complete dentures: Complete dentures come to rescue when each and every tooth of a person is missing. Complete dentures again can be of two types, immediate or conventional. In case of conventional denture, once the teeth are removed, the gum tissues are allowed to get healed for a span of eight to twelve weeks. The conventional dentures are only placed in the mouth once the gum tissues are completely healed. In contrast to conventional dentures, immediate dentures are placed, just after removing the teeth.
Partial dentures: The partial dentures is recommended when a person still has some of his natural teeth. These kinds of dentures usually have replacement teeth, which are attached firmly to a plastic base. This plastic base generally has a metal structure that helps to hold the denture properly within the mouth. As in case of the partial denture, there is already one or more existing teeth in either of the jaws, a bridge can be used to replace 1 or more than 1 teeth. This bridge is cemented and the the crowns are placed on both sides of space of the teeth. Finally, the artificial teeth are attached to them. This partial dentures fill up the space that is formed by the missing teeth.
Other benefits of placing the partial dentures are:
- The existing teeth do not get the chances of changing their position.
- The risk of periodontal disease gets reduced.
- Helps to maintain the shape of the face.
- It releases the stress of the jaw.
- The process of chewing and speaking become much easier.
Denture implants: These types of dentures are different from regular dentures because they are supported by and attached to implants. Dental implants are specially used in cases, where a person does not have any more teeth in either of the jaw, but have enough bone to support the implant. The implant supported dentures have to be removed on a daily basis, in order to clean both the dentures as well as the gum area. These should also be removed while sleeping at night.
There are two types of denture implants, i.e., bar-retained and ball-retained denture implants.
- Bar-retained dentures:Here, a thin metal bar is used, which is placed according to the curve of the jaw. This bar is attached to two to five implants, that have been already placed in the jawbone. Clips or other attachments are used, in order to keep the dentures in place.
- Ball-retained dentures:In this case, each of the implant in the jawbone grip a metal attachment, that holds into another attachment. These attachments on the implants are usually balled shaped and are called the male attachments, which fit into sockets, i.e. the female attachments.
The costs of the denture implants are usually higher and they resemble very similar to the real teeth. However, it’s not recommended for everyone.
